photo_2024-04-15 20.08.55.jpeg

Director Kirill Serebrennikov

The outrageous story of Eduard Limonov, the radical Soviet poet who became a bum in New York, a sensation in France, and a political antihero in Russia.

FILMING LOCATIONS:

SET DESIGN TASK

The story took places in USSR Kharkiv in 40s-50s, Moscow 70s and 90s, New York 80s, Paris 90s and Eastern Europe 90s. Most of the locations were build in the pavilion.

Due to the director's idea the set design should be very detailed, historicly presicesed and same time transformable.

Moscow, Russia

Riga, Latvia

Paris, France

KHARKIV USSR 40s-50s

Street near the Eddies house and military point. This scene takes place in Kharkiv suburb. Director and DOP created a very interesting long shot with camera flying through the wall, so we were going to show the inner space with its atmosphere of stuffy sweaty room full of young men, to a cold misty street  of late autimn, completely unwelcoming place with a very little group of wretches hurrying home.

I have been working with Kirill several times before and I know his love to historical precious details and documentory way of filming so we needed to create an inner and outside space same as it was almost 80 years ago.

KHARKIV USSR 40s-50s

In this scene Kirill asked me to create a space of rather rich provincial flat with a flair of intellectual art underground atmocphere. We created the set in abounded historical building in the centre of Moscow. We have to reconstruct everything, wallpapers, pales, floor  and of course furniture and prompts.

All the prompts were exactly from the same time.

Arhitecture model. Due the director's idea we need to create a model of the house to make an illusion for the difficult one cut shot.

We were working in a strong connection with DOP and special effect team and managed to create an object which give a feeling of real 1x1 size copy. Same technology we used to do for the feature film"Petrov's flu" with same director and DOP.

NEW YOURK, USA 70-80s

Due to the difficulties of managing filming in the USA producers considered that it's cheeper to recreate the New York street in the pavilion.

So we made a huge research to the details, types, colors and materials of that time and recreated the stree completely, with all the stores, bars, cafes, cinema, garbage bins and even homeless people spleeping points.

The full size of the street was 150m x20 m.
